- 1 loaf unsliced coarse white bread, crusts removed
- 1 C packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 C butter
- 2 Tbsp light Karo syrup
- 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 C pecan gems
- 5 extra large eggs, beaten
- 1 1/2 C milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 tsp fresh grated nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
Thickly slice the bread, removing and discarding the crusts.
In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, Karo, and cinnamon and heat hte mixture to a simmer. When all is metled, pour the mixture into a sprayed 9×13 inch shallow baking dish. SPrinkle the pecan gems over the syrup. Arrange the squares of bread over the mixture.
In a medium-size mixing bowl, beat the eggs, then whisk in the remaining ingredients. Carefully pour the mixture over the bread. Cover wiht plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Remove from the refrigerator about an hour before baking. Bake, uncovered, in a preheated 350 oven for 45 minutes.
