Baked Macaroni and Cheese

  • 1 stick of butter
  • 6 slices of white bread (remove crust and tear into pieces
  • 5  1/2 C milk
  • 1/2 C flour
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4  tsp. Nutmeg
  • 1/4  tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne
  • 4  1/2 C grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2  C grated gruyere cheese (or cheddar cheese;     or 1 1/4 C grated romano cheese)
  • 1 lb. Macaroni

Put bread in bowl. Melt 2 Tbsp. of butter and mix with bread. 

Heat butter and flour and cook for one min. Add milk. Cook until mixture becomes thick.  Stir in salt, nutmeg, and pepper.  Stir in 3 C cheddar, 1 1/2 C gruyere (or 1 C romano).

Cook     macaroni 2-3 min. less than instructed. Rinse. Mix with cheese sauce and put in 9 X 13” dish.

Sprinkle rest of cheese and bread on top of mixture.  Bake 30 min. at 375 degrees.
